Focus on Trump and Johnson at the G7 summit

23 Aug 2019

This weekend, France will host the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Biarritz, in which a number of the world’s most powerful leaders will discuss the issues affecting the global economy and geopolitics. The meeting will mark Boris Johnson’s first meeting since becoming UK Prime Minister.

Amid pressing global disputes that are, in return, having an impact on the worldwide economy, Boris Johnson, Donald Trump among others will be meeting at the G7 summit to review and consider solutions.

Currently, the UK is during an uncertain period in which it is trying to find a solution and have a backup plan in case of a no-Brexit deal. Brexit is set to change the country’s trade course, unless an agreement is reached with the EU before leaving. The U.S. has previously stated that the nation is open to trade with the UK once it leaves the EU. Leaders of the members of the EU have emphasised to Johnson that the proposed Brexit deal will not change. The deal was made during the time when Theresa May was acting British Prime Minister. The UK’s deadline for Brexit is October 31st.

Furthermore, Johnson will share the centre stage with Trump, who has also had problems with the EU in the past. As the U.S. faces friction in its relationship with China, the President suggested that he might target the EU, which he described to be treating them ‘worse than China.’ In May, Trump hinted that he could impose a 25% tariff on its car industry.

French President Emmanuel Macron will host leaders from the U.S., the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
