Netflix hit by streaming outage

22 Nov 2019

Many Netflix users around the world were left unable to use the paid-for service on Thursday due to an outage.

Users across parts of the U.S., Asia and Europe reported difficulties loading their favourite TV shows and movies, according to tracking site Down Detector.

While most users said they were able to log in to the platform, when attempting to stream content they were met with a message reading: “Cannot play title. Please try again later.”

Netflix apologised for the disruption, adding it was working tirelessly to fix the problem.

A statement posted an hour later to Netflix’s help centre page stated it was “not currently experiencing an interruption to our streaming service.”

The market appeared to dismiss the outage, going slightly higher after the Thursday open.

The issue represented an unusual blow for the tech and streaming giant, which has been comparatively immune to technical problems.

The Netflix problem comes days after Disney Plus’s highly-anticipated launch was beset by a series of glitches, with new users unable to watch shows or, in some circumstances, log in.

It came after thousands of accounts on Disney’s new streaming service were reportedly hacked and/or put up for sale on the dark web, according to an investigation by Zdnet.
