BT to start Netflix-style packages

18 Feb 2020

BT customers will no longer be offered pay-TV packages as the broadcaster will be introducing a Netflix-style system, offering its prime content for a monthly subscription.

The broadcaster previously used traditional packages due to its acquiring of Champions League football, Premiership Rugby and boxing rights. Customers were offered long-term contracts for specific bundles.

Recently, there has been a rise in the demand for streaming, leading BT to mirror the services offered by Netflix and Disney+. These would allow customers to subscribe to more flexible packages.

BT’s consumer division chief executive Marc Allera explained, “Being flexible is more in tune with how customers want to consume content in a streaming world. For example, the race for the Premier League title may be over in a few weeks and once that is done some viewers may prefer to spend their money on movie, or entertainment, packages. Or if families are going abroad on holiday in the summer, they may want to switch off a sports subscription.”

Customers will have the possibility to opt for an entertainment package or one for “Big Sport” for £10 and £40 every month respectively.

Furthermore, BT has facilitated the signing up or changing the deal, which may be done online. However, this will be offered if consumers have a BT broadband package for up to 24 months.

“You could also see people spin-up [get more packages] given they can upgrade at will,” he said. “We have to respond to how customers want to consume TV – it is what we have to do to remain relevant,” Allera added.

This move follows the decision to offer a monthly pass at the end of last year.
